Jocelyn Lutes

Education/Work Background

I completed my undergraduate studies at Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI, where I double-majored in Biopsychology and Spanish. Then, I moved to Boston, MA where I earned my M.S. in Developmental and Brain Sciences at UMass Boston and worked as a research assistant in a lab that investigated the impact of medications during pregnancy on the cognitive and behavioral development of children. Currently, I am pursuing my M.S. in Computer Science at UMass Amherst, and I work full-time as a Data Scientist at MassMutual.

R experience

My first exposure to the data science workflow was in Python, but in my day-to-day work, I frequently use R to clean and wrangle data, build predictive models, and visualize results. So far, everything that I have learned about R has been motivated by needing to solve specific, work-related tasks, so I am very excited to more formally learn about the tidyverse and see how it can lead to an improved data science experience!

Research interests

I am predominantly interested in how machine learning can be used to solve problems within the health and medical domains.

Hometown

I am from the very small town of Benton, WI (population 958)!

Hobbies

  • Cooking and baking
  • Trying new restaurants
  • Listening to podcasts
  • Learning new things via MOOCs

Fun fact

During my undergraduate research experience, I extracted and photographed the brains of fruit flies.
